I grew up not far from here in Charlotte, NC. I was actually born in Columbus, OH but my family moved to this region when I was 5 years old. I don’t remember much of the Midwest aside from the fact that it seemed cold and dreary most of the year.
My family wasn’t particularly oriented towards church as I was growing up. We were more of the “Christmas and Easter only” type of Christians. It wasn’t until I was nearly 30 years old that I felt the not-so-gentle pull of the Lord Jesus Christ in my life. Having run on my own steam for that many years, I felt depressed, lonely and lost. Then my mother, who had several years before become a member of a Presbyterian church, asked me to come to church with her. I went and my life changed! I’ll never forget hearing the words of her pastor announcing the Declaration of Pardon and truly feeling as though God loved me and forgave me. I was undone by it. I began crying there in the pew. I didn’t know what was going on, but I liked it. God gave me the wisdom to recognize the goodness of it and I soon became a member of a church through baptism. By the power of the Holy Spirit, I poured my life into Christ’s church, studying the Word and faithfully ministering to others.
From that day at my Mother’s church forward, I feel as though my entire life is being transformed by God’s gracious power. God led me to go back and complete an undergraduate degree long abandoned. From there, God led me to Duke Divinity School and then to Myers Park Presbyterian Church. Finally, God led me here, as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Mount Holly. Along that joyous path, I met my wife, Natalie, a local veterinarian. We’re the parents of one son, Benjamin who we love dearly.
I consider being a pastor one of the many great blessings God’s shared with me and I love what I do. Each and every day, I am allowed to share in and nurture the sacred lives of so many people through pastoral care, preaching and teaching. Sometimes I look back ten years and wonder “How in the world did I ever get here from where I was?” The answer always comes to me by the Holy Spirit answering, “Through God’s Amazing Grace!
